Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Protons: Signatures and Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
The status of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff and pair-production dip in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is discussed. They are the features in the spectrum of protons propagating through CMB radiation in extragalactic space, and discovery of these features implies that primary particles are mostly extragalactic protons. The spectra measured by AGASA, Yakutsk, HiRes and Auger detectors are in good agreement with the pair-production dip, and HiRes data have strong evidences for the GZK cutoff. The Auger spectrum, as presented at the 30th ICRC 2007, agrees with the GZK cutoff, too. The AGASA data agree well with the beginning of the GZK cutoff at E < ∼ 8 × 10 eV, but show the excess of events at higher energies, the origin of which is not understood. The difference in the absolute fluxes measured by different detectors disappears after energy shift within the systematic errors of each experiment.

Prompt Gev-tev Emission of Gamma-ray Bursts Due to High-energy Protons, Muons and Electron-positron Pairs
In the framework of the internal shock scenario, we model the broadband prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with emphasis on the GeV-TeV bands, utilizing Monte Carlo simulations that include various processes associated with electrons and protons accelerated to high energies. While inverse Compton emission from primary electrons is often dominant, different proton-induced mechanisms can ...
متن کاملOrigin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the era of Auger and Telescope Array
The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is discussed in light of the latest observational results from the Pierre Auger Observatory, highlighting potential astrophysical sources such as active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, and clusters of galaxies. Key issues include their energy budget, the acceleration and escape of protons and nuclei, and their propagation in extragalactic radiation...

The γ-ray burst (GRB) model for production of ultra-high-energy, > 10 eV, cosmic-rays is based on the hypothesis that GRBs arise from the dissipation of the kinetic energy of relativistic fireballs at cosmological distances. Recent observations of delayed low energy emission, “afterglow,” from GRB sources strongly support the validity of this hypothesis. Observations also provide quantitative s...

We discuss the relation between the acceleration spectra of extragalactic cosmic ray protons and the luminosity and cosmological evolution of their sources and the production of ultra high energy cosmogenic neutrinos in their propagation from the sources to us.
